I’m tired of design that whispers. I’m tired of “approachable” being code for “forgettable.” I’m tired of watching brands neuter themselves to appeal to everyone and end up appealing to no one.
Here’s the thing about bold design that people don’t understand: it’s not reckless. It’s actually the opposite. Bold design is the result of knowing exactly who you are and having the conviction to show it. It’s a restraint in the service of clarity. It’s saying no to everything that dilutes
the message.
Too many designers are scared of their own work. They soften it. They sand down the edges. They add more options, more variations, more “flexibility” until the whole thing becomes a beige puddle of nothing. That’s not design. That’s design by committee, and it’s a slow death.
Real design makes a choice and commits to it. It knows its audience and respects them enough to be clear. It doesn’t try to please everyone because it understands something fundamental: trying to please everyone is how you become invisible.
When I design, I’m not asking “will everyone like this?” I’m asking, “Is this true? Does it work? Does it say what needs to be said?” If the answer is yes, the colour intensity, the font choice, the spacing—all of it becomes justified. All of it becomes necessary.
Bold isn’t the opposite of good design. Timidity is.
